Reports said Nigeria’s defence minister was about to resign. He denied it in the strongest terms possible and promised to sue whoever started the rumour. What he didn’t do was answer the actual question sitting one story above this one.

Christopher Musa, a retired general who’s been Nigeria’s defence minister since December, told reporters at the Presidential Villa on Tuesday that he isn’t resigning. He said he’s never even discussed the idea. He said he doesn’t know who started the story and that whoever did will face legal action. He’d just come from briefing President Tinubu on the security situation, and he said the president was happy with what he heard.

Musa framed the whole episode as jealousy. People who don’t like how well things are going, trying to knock him off balance. He told reporters the security situation is improving and that Nigerians should expect pushback whenever the country starts winning.

Here’s the thing about that answer. It isn’t wrong that things have improved in specific, measurable ways. It’s also not the same as accountability, and Musa wasn’t asked to explain a policy failure. He was asked about a rumour, and he answered with certainty and a legal threat, which is the fastest way to close a question without actually opening it.

Compare that instinct to what happened one story up. Nobody in the Hajj chain offered that kind of certainty. NAHCON pointed at the states. The states pointed at classification. Immigration pointed at the SSS. The SSS said nothing at all. When the question is embarrassing and specific, like how seven flagged men boarded a plane, the government goes quiet. When the question is personal and deniable, like whether the minister is quitting, the government comes out swinging with a statement and a threat of a lawsuit.

That’s not really about Musa. It’s about which kinds of questions this government has learned to answer fast, and which ones it still hasn’t figured out how to answer at all.
