Niger State's governor says 63 people were taken from Dekara on 21 August, 33 from a mosque and 30 from a market. Communities in the district have published a list, signed by the youth president, naming 547 people they say were abducted. No report cited says how the state reached its figure, and none says whether the 14 people the governor says were recovered appear on the list. Sixteen days before the attack, the presidency announced the rescue of 308 people from the Kainji Lake National Park forest. The communities say the 547 were taken into it.
Elsewhere, two more announced figures sit beside observed ones. President Tinubu has set 1 October as a target for lower transport fares. Leadership's checks in Lagos on 7 September found fares unchanged. A later report from Abuja's Area 1 Motor Park found the announced 40 per cent cut had not reached it. At official-market rates, £800 converts to about ₦149,000 fewer naira than in January, and the naira has held firm. Imported petrol was cheaper than Dangote's price on 1 September by one tracker's count. A marketers' association put the landing cost above it on 8 September, and Dangote raised its price on 12 September. Nothing published establishes that the refinery raised its price because of that gap.
In Lagos, an 18-year-old has demonstrated SafeLink, an app that she says sends distress messages between phones without internet. Its current range is about 100 metres, and a two-kilometre range is her goal.
Here's what it means. Every story today has an announced figure and an observed one. Where the two sit far apart, the reporting so far shows who has said what. It does not yet show which figure is right.
