Kano governor joins APC with 74 elected officials mid-term
Vice President Shettima is in Kano right now receiving Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf into the APC.
Yesterday Yusuf left NNPP. 22 state lawmakers went with him. 9 federal lawmakers. All 44 local council chairmen. That's 74 people switching parties mid-term.
With Kano — Nigeria's most populous state — the APC now controls 29 of 36 states.
This isn't about ideology. It's about access. Yusuf's calculation was simple: opposition governors watch federal projects go to ruling party states. Infrastructure funding flows through political alignment, not need. Security support follows the same pattern.
So he chose resources over loyalty.
Kwankwaso calls it betrayal. Kwankwasiyya supporters risked their lives getting Yusuf elected in 2023. Some died. The Emir was deposed for supporting him. Now Yusuf's joined the party that tried to rig him out.
But here's the uncomfortable truth: both sides have a point.
When 80% of states answer to one party, where do citizens go when the ruling party fails them? The answer today: US troops for security, higher electricity bills for power, tighter visa rules for exit options.
The whole structure just... migrates. Welcome to Nigeria's version of political competition.
