THE SOUND NIGERIA BUILT WITHOUT ASKING PERMISSION

Tuesday, 24 February 2026

1.4 billion listening hours in one year. Average age: 26.

Spotify's five-year Nigeria data dropped yesterday. Streaming up 163.5% on average every year since 2021. Afrobeats up 5,022%. Gospel and Praise up 5,499%. Amapiano up 10,330%. Indigenous language listening up 554% in 2024 alone. In 2025, Nigerians clocked 1.4 billion hours of listening. 25 million playlists created. Average listener age: 26.

No government policy produced any of this.

That 26-year-old grew up on power cuts, petrol queues, and school kidnappings. The same person the FCT elections just failed. The same person whose constitutional rights depend on who holds power that week.

That person built something the world is listening to. Not because the state helped. In spite of the fact that it didn't.

On a day this heavy, that's worth sitting with.
