THE CHAMPION

Oluwadamilola Adeolu, 14, from Ekiti, just beat thirty-plus African countries. Next stop: China.

On March 20, in Harare, Zimbabwe, 14-year-old Oluwadamilola Adeolu of St. Lawrence Metropolitan College, Ado-Ekiti, won the Junior Category of the 2026 African Spelling Bee. She outspelled contestants from over 30 African countries. A fellow Nigerian, Abdurrahman Yusuf from Ilorin, placed third. Nigeria finished second overall in the team rankings.

Adeolu has placed in every major competition since 2023, improving each time. She came fifth in the 2025 African Spelling Bee. She came back this year and won. She takes home a $5,000 educational scholarship and a place at the World Spelling Bee in China.

The system that produced her is the same one underfunding classrooms, struggling to pay teachers, and pricing families out of quality education. She won anyway. That's not a metaphor. It's just what happened.

Nigeria's talent isn't the problem. It never was. The question is what the country will build around it when it finally decides to.
