Three players in Eric Chelle's squad for the opening AFCON 2027 qualifiers were reported as receiving first senior call-ups. Arthur Okonkwo, Isaac James, and George Ilenikhena, according to CAF's official report and independently confirmed by Arise News.
CAF's own report complicates the "new faces" framing directly. Arthur Okonkwo, listed among the newcomers, is described elsewhere in the same reporting cycle as already having Super Eagles experience via the Unity Cup, alongside Chibuike Nwaiwu. Isaac James, George Ilenikhena, and Moses Usor are the three still waiting for their senior debuts.
Three players, Okonkwo, James, and Ilenikhena, were reported as receiving first senior call-ups to this squad. Usor was also selected and, along with James and Ilenikhena, is yet to make his senior debut. Okonkwo's own senior debut has already happened. This is a return, not a first arrival.
Ilenikhena's path runs Amiens to Antwerp to Monaco to Al-Ittihad. Isaac James plays for Alverca in Portugal. Both differ from Nigeria's traditional NPFL-to-Europe route into international recognition.
No Chelle or NFF statement has addressed a broader scouting strategy behind these three routes landing in one squad. Three players arrived by three different roads. One of them, Okonkwo, is a recall, not a debut. Whether the other two repeat across future windows, or this window is simply how the squad happened to fall this time, isn't yet established.
