FIVE HUNDRED YEARS, ONE THRONE

By Adeyemi Oke | Thursday, 10 September 2026

Onitsha's monarchy has outlasted every government Nigeria has had. This October, it marks 500 years unbroken.

The Ofala Steering Committee unveiled its 2026 festival logo and theme on Monday. The theme is "Igba mbo, iga n'iru," Strive and Advance. The festival itself runs 16 and 17 October at Ime Obi, Ezechima Square, in Onitsha, Anambra State.

Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe is the 21st Obi of Onitsha, tracing his line back to Eze Chima, the kingdom's founding monarch. He ascended the throne in May 2002. The institution he leads predates the Nigerian state, the colonial protectorate that preceded it, and every empire that has claimed the Niger's eastern bank since.

Committee chairman Okechukwu Areh said the logo was built to hold two things at once. Five hundred years of continuity. An institution that still has somewhere to go. "For 500 years, our forebears strove to build, protect, and sustain the Onitsha Kingdom," Areh said. The advancing part, he added, runs through culture, enterprise, youth development and unity.

Ofala marks the Obi's annual emergence from ritual seclusion, the ceremonial high point of Onitsha's calendar. This year's programme adds an art exhibition and a youth carnival to the traditional rites, alongside the usual procession of red-capped chiefs and attendants before the throne.

Half a millennium of unbroken succession is not a small claim for any institution to make. Onitsha is making it anyway, with a festival date, a theme, and a crowd already planning to show up.
