Three things from this week worth carrying into the weekend.

1. Stability is a number. Feeling it is a different exercise.

Finance minister Taiwo Oyedele told a room of employers in Abuja that Nigeria has moved from economic decline to stability. The reforms that caused short term pain, he said, were necessary. He is not wrong about the data. Reserves are up, inflation has eased, the naira has held. That claim and the claim that a naira in someone's pocket stretches further are two different sentences. Only one of them shows up on a payslip.

2. A nun, a nurse, and a rosary taken at the church door.

Sister Leticia Ugboaja, a 56 year old Nigerian nun and registered nurse, was stopped by ICE agents on her way to Sunday Mass in McAllen, Texas. She was held for hours before bipartisan pressure got her released the same day. She has worked in Texas hospitals for over a decade. Nobody has explained why she was stopped. This is the diaspora story underneath every other diaspora story. Doing everything right does not always mean a system leaves you alone.

3. Austria's long wait ended in three goals.

Spain beat Austria 3 0 in the World Cup round of 32, ending Austria's first appearance at this stage in decades. Carney Chukwuemeka was born in Vienna to Nigerian parents and capped for Austria after switching from England's youth setup. He came on as a second half substitute and never got the ball somewhere dangerous enough to matter. Choosing a country does not guarantee the country chooses you back on the night that counts.
