Nigeria's Para Badminton team won 14 medals in Uganda last week. Nine gold, five silver. Most people are hearing about it here first.

Nigeria's Para Badminton team took nine gold and five silver medals at the 2026 Uganda Para Badminton International Championship, held from 7 to 12 July. Lyka Brown won gold in the women's singles, then teamed up with Chukwuemeka Ijeoma Gift for a second gold in doubles. Emmanuel Ifeanacho Ohaeri took gold in the men's singles, then partnered with Brown for another gold in mixed doubles. Wheelchair and standing category athletes both medalled across the tournament.

The federation's own president called it proof the country can depend on this team to deliver. He's not wrong. What he didn't say is who actually paid for the trip. Not a federal sports ministry budget line. The Abia State Government, the Bayelsa State Government, and the Police College Badminton Club in Lagos each sponsored individual athletes to get the team to Uganda at all. They footed bills the federation itself couldn't cover alone.

These wins didn't wait for a federal budget line to arrive. They happened anyway, funded by whoever showed up first.
