Kayinsola Ajayi just beat a field that included a former world champion, in front of a Diamond League crowd, with a legal wind reading. No qualifier needed on this one.

At the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Kayinsola Ajayi crossed the line in 9.84 seconds and equalled his own Nigerian record, this time under fully legal wind conditions. He beat Jamaica's Oblique Seville and former world champion Christian Coleman to do it. This was his Diamond League debut.

Ajayi arrived at Eugene off the back of an NCAA season at Auburn University where he became Nigeria's fastest man in history, breaking Olusoji Fasuba's 2006 record. That earlier run carried an illegal tailwind, the kind of asterisk that lets doubters wave a performance away. This one carries no such asterisk. Legal conditions, a stacked field, a win.

Tobi Amusan, competing the same day, finished second in the women's 100m hurdles in 12.34 seconds, behind American Masai Russell. Another strong week for Nigerian sprinting, even without a second gold.

With the Commonwealth Games approaching in Glasgow, Ajayi has just given the country a reason to expect him on that start line with real intent. No hedge required this time. He ran the field down and the clock backed him up.
