Nigeria has never had a national netball team before this year. The federation was founded earlier in 2026. The squad, almost entirely Nigerian players based in England, was assembled in June. Three months later they were in Nairobi. First West African nation ever to compete at the Africa Netball Cup.

The scorelines say how far there is to go. Lost to hosts Kenya, 61-40. Lost to sixth-ranked Uganda, 68-30. Lost to Malawi, 82-22, down 21-6 after a single quarter. Zambia, Tuesday, closed out the pool stage.

The Nigeria Netball Federation has been explicit that qualification for the 2027 World Cup is the actual goal, not just participation. Three results in, that goal is still a long way off. The team they're chasing it against have decades of organised competition behind them. Kenya has hosted this tournament. Uganda sits sixth in the world. Malawi has been to multiple World Cups. Nigeria has had a federation for seven months.

A national team assembled in June is already playing established African sides in September. The scorelines tell you how far Nigeria has to go. The existence of the team tells you where the starting line is.
