FROM UNILAG TO ROSTOV

A Nigerian graduate gave her valedictory speech in fluent Russian.

Dr Dorcas Akanbi finished medical school at Rostov State Medical University this month. She graduated with a 4.90 out of 5.00 cumulative grade point average, one of the best results in her class. She marked the moment by delivering her valedictory address entirely in Russian, to a hall full of faculty, classmates and family who had watched her learn the language from scratch.

"From Unilag to Russia, God did it," she wrote afterward, sharing the moment online. The video of her speech spread quickly. Nigerians online remarked less on the grades and more on how completely she'd made herself at home in a language and a country that weren't hers to begin with.

There's no system to interpret here and no institution to hold accountable. Just a young Nigerian doctor who left Lagos and learned a second language well enough to close out her own graduation in it. She came out the other side one of the best in her cohort. Some days the only news worth carrying into tomorrow is that somebody, somewhere, quietly finished the thing they set out to do.

Congratulations, Dr Akanbi.
