What Changed for Tolu Arokodare at Ajax?

By Adeyemi Oke | Saturday, 26 September 2026

Tolu Arokodare came off the bench in the 62nd minute against Excelsior. Two minutes later, he scored. Ajax drew 2–2.

Six goals and two assists in nine appearances this season, across all competitions.

Excelsior manager Ruben den Uil, after the match, is reported to have singled out Arokodare's strength and physical presence, calling him a mismatch problem, a "cheat code."

For background: Arokodare joined Ajax on a season-long loan from Wolves in a deal reported around £17m with an option to buy, and has spoken about the move himself, including admitting he "thought his agent was joking" when Ajax's interest was first raised.

Den Uil's comment describes what Arokodare physically presents to an opponent. It doesn't establish that Ajax has changed or developed him since his move from Wolves. Whether this is simply what Arokodare has always been physically capable of, now landing in a league and role where it shows up more clearly on the scoresheet, or something Ajax's system has specifically built, isn't answered by the quote alone.

Arokodare said after the Excelsior match that he wasn't fully recovered from illness. The performance came despite that.

Ajax's positioning of Arokodare to exploit that physical mismatch, or the absence of any such system and a defender problem he'd create anywhere, determines whether this is a story about Ajax's coaching or about why Wolves didn't get the same output from him.
