Ugo Ugochukwu won the 2026 FIA Formula 3 championship in Madrid on Sunday, becoming the first American driver ever to win the title. His mother is Nigerian supermodel Oluchi Onweagba.
Ugochukwu, 19, sealed the title at the Madring circuit after finishing second in the final race of the season, enough to overturn British rival Freddie Slater’s 15-point lead going into the weekend. He finished the season on 159 points, 14 clear of Slater.
Ugochukwu was born and raised in New York City. His mother is Oluchi Onweagba, who won the inaugural Face of Africa modelling competition in 1998 and became one of the continent’s most recognised faces; his father is an Italian fashion designer. He was signed to the McLaren Driver Development Programme at 13. McLaren dropped him in November 2025 after a winless first season in Formula 3. He joined Campos Racing for 2026 instead, and won the championship at his first attempt with the new team.
Before Formula 3, he’d already become the first American in more than four decades to win the Macau Grand Prix, in 2024, and won the Euro 4 championship the year before that. He took his first F3 win in Melbourne this season, building an early lead before the race finished under a safety car. Formula 3 is one rung below Formula 2, which is one rung below Formula 1. Two of Ugochukwu’s predecessors as F3 champion, Oscar Piastri and Gabriel Bortoleto, are now racing in Formula 1.
After sealing the title, Ugochukwu kept his reaction short. He said the team knew it needed a clean race to clinch it, and that’s what they did.
There’s no ministry involved in this story. No committee, no concession, no dispute over whose name is on the ownership papers. A 19-year-old carrying an Igbo name into a European racing paddock got dropped by the biggest team in his sport and answered it by winning the whole championship less than a year later, for a smaller one, on the same ladder that’s already carried two of his rivals to Formula 1.
