Team Nigeria's medal chase begins today in Glasgow. The first lift belongs to a woman who's already broken the world record once.

Para powerlifting opens the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games today, the first time in the Games' history that a Para sport has delivered the opening medal of the competition. Nigeria's team captain, Folashade Oluwafemiayo, is defending the title she won four years ago with a world record lift. Since then she's added a Paralympic gold in Paris and another world title in Cairo.

She isn't lifting alone. Rita Ferdinand, the reigning world champion in her class, makes her Commonwealth Games debut today after matching the women's world record at the African Open Championships earlier this year. Nigeria topped the para powerlifting medal table four years ago with four medals. Both women arrive in Glasgow as favourites to add to it.

Team Nigeria brought 74 athletes to Scotland across ten sports, with a target of 16 to 20 gold medals. World record holder Tobi Amusan chases a third straight Commonwealth title in the 100m hurdles once athletics begins. But today belongs to the lifters, and to a captain who has spent four years since her last Commonwealth gold quietly rewriting what her category's ceiling looks like.
