Four Nigerian schoolkids went to their first ever Spelling Bee World Cup. They came home with gold.

Nigeria has never sent a team to the Spelling Bee World Cup before this year. Not once. The competition has been running internationally for years, and until 2026, no Nigerian child had ever stood on that stage.

Four of them changed that. Oluwadamilola Adeolu, Abdurrahman Yusuf, Chinedu Okediachi and Maryam Yusuf qualified through the Nigeria Spelling Bee. Then came the African Spelling Bee Championship in Harare, where Adeolu topped the junior category outright. From there it was Shanghai, and a stage against the best young spellers the rest of the world could put forward.

Team Nigeria won gold in the Middle School Group Category. First appearance, straight to the top of the podium. Two of the four, the Yusuf siblings from Ar-Raheem International College in Ilorin, each walked away with individual medals as well.

Nobody sent this team to China expecting a trophy. They sent four kids to represent a country that had never been represented there before, and hoped they would hold their own. They did more than that. Something worth remembering the next time the news makes Nigeria feel like it only loses.
