Nobody was watching this tournament. Nigeria won it anyway.

Team Nigeria came home from the 2026 NFL Flag Africa Continental Championship in Nairobi with two titles. The women's senior team beat Egypt 27 to 18 in the final. The under 13 co-ed team went unbeaten through the whole tournament and closed it out against Ghana, winning 30 to 6.

Flag football isn't a sport most Nigerians are following closely yet, and that's exactly the point. It makes its Olympic debut at the Los Angeles Games in 2028, and Nigeria isn't waiting until then to start building a program that wins. The women's head coach, Anireju Ayida, has quietly put together a squad that just beat the strongest team on the continent for the second tournament running.

There was no ministry statement waiting to greet these athletes at the airport, and no council formed in their honour within a week. Just a group of players in Kenya who did their jobs and came home with medals nobody outside the sport was expecting.

The tournament brought together five countries, Nigeria, Egypt, Ghana, South Africa and host nation Kenya, and Nigeria walked away with more gold than any of them. Egypt took the men's title. South Africa and Kenya picked up bronze. Everything else belonged to Nigeria. Flag football isn't football in the way most Nigerians mean the word. But a program that can beat five nations on their own continent, twice, in the same weekend, is worth watching before the world starts watching it too.
