WHAT YOU BUILT

Four stories about the cost of systems that work exactly as designed.

The four stories in today's Room are about different rooms, different people, different formations. But underneath all of them is the same thing.

Something was built carefully. It worked. And the person who built it is paying a price the design never accounted for.

Adams built three children who stand on their own. Ali stayed in a gym that paid him four dollars a week. A woman built four years of considered decision-making into a plan. Five people walked into a church on a Sunday morning and received the same sentence through five completely different formations.

What you build doesn't always include you.

1. THE $4

Muhammad Ali could see the gym where they were teaching the fundamentals he didn't have. He'd been beaten by someone who trained there. He knew what the difference was. He stayed where he was anyway.

She would not have qualified for the bill anyway. The bill was written for the terminally ill. Wendy was something the law does not have language for.

4. THE BILLS

Adams has been checking this app for nineteen years. Not like this. Before, he checked because he already knew the answer. Now he checks to see if there is enough.

His three children are employed. They live in his house. He has been sick for five months. Not one of them has asked what the month looks like. He gave them independence. He did not realise independence, here, does not include him.

THE SUNDAY GAME

Three moments. One Sunday.
