THE ROOM

Seven Nigerians moved through the same financial journey across seven stages, from Demilade pulling the income lever that never closes the gap to Taiwo standing at the last door she can't bring herself to open.

DEMILADE

Demilade's salary went up in January and his month-end balance stayed the same, revealing that a bigger income on the same architecture doesn't close the gap. It upgrades it.

FUNMI

Funmi built her first real budget on a Sunday, ring-fenced the Nigeria line, and transferred the full amount to her cousin Biodun within thirty seconds of a WhatsApp message, three weeks before the month was done.

OLUMIDE

Olumide spent two years knowing exactly what he needed to do, set up a £240 monthly standing order on a Thursday evening, and four years later received a statement for £17,000 he never had to show up for.

GIDEON AND LOLADE

Lolade sent Rightmove links for three years while the deposit sat in a current account earning almost nothing, and Gideon avoided the mortgage not because of the money but because a house here felt like a declaration he wasn't ready to make.

ZAINAB

Zainab survived a redundancy in October 2021 by raiding her emergency fund and pausing her standing order, rebuilt within two months, and kept the income protection leaflet in a drawer because she believed rebuilding meant she wasn't exposed.

CHUKWUDI

Chukwudi built a Stocks and Shares ISA despite watching his father's Lagos scheme disappear and his uncle's pension pay out at near nothing, then checked the balance every week until the anxiety of monitoring undid what the architecture was built to do.

TAIWO

Taiwo arrived in 2003, built every layer of the parallel path over twenty-two years, and stood at the last door in the room unable to open it because legacy felt like a word for other families, until a Saturday morning at the kitchen table with her seventeen-year-old daughter.
