THE KING WHO WASN'T A KING

On 14 March 2026, an Igbo community in KuGompo City installed a community leader under the title Igwe Ndigbo Na East London. Two weeks later, ten vehicles were burning in the streets. This is the full story.

PART ONE: THE WORD

In Igbo, igwe means the sky. In diaspora communities worldwide, it designates a cultural leader. In South Africa's Eastern Cape, governed by the Traditional and Khoi-San Leadership Act of 2019, it was heard as something else entirely, and the South-East Council of Traditional Rulers had already banned the title thirteen months before KuGompo used it.

PART TWO: THE STREET

The march on 30 March 2026 began peacefully and ended with ten vehicles torched, one building partially burned, no arrests made, and the Nigerian High Commission telling its citizens in South Africa to keep a low profile and report threats to the police who had just fired rubber bullets at the crowd.

PART THREE: THE PATTERN

Between 1994 and March 2024, xenophobic attacks in South Africa produced 669 deaths, 5,310 looted shops, and 127,572 displacements. Nigeria and South Africa signed an MOU in 2013 to prevent further attacks. The events of 2017, 2019, and 2026 show what that MOU was worth in the absence of structural change.
