MALLAM FATORI HELD

Friday, 20 March 2026

61 fighters killed. Three commanders named. The border town fought for again.

Nigerian troops repelled a major coordinated assault on Mallam Fatori, in Abadam Local Government Area of Borno State, this week. The insurgents advanced on foot from the Duguri general area, using armed drones to provide cover — one of the more sophisticated tactical configurations seen in recent northeast engagements.

The 68 Battalion held its position. Air Force support came in during the assault. By the end of the operation, 61 fighters were dead. Three commanders were identified: Abdulrahman Gobara, Mallam Ba Yuram, Abou Ayyuba. Those aren't just names. Field commanders represent institutional knowledge — tactics, financing, recruitment, logistics. Losing three in one engagement disrupts operations in ways that fatality numbers alone don't capture.

Mallam Fatori matters because of what it connects. It's a border corridor. Fighters who retreat from it cross into Niger Republic and return. The victory this week is real. It's also the latest round in a contest that has been running for years and has no end date anyone has named.
