THE MINISTER’S TARGET

Thursday, 19 March 2026

Five things Tinubu said he'd fix. One minister is leaving with his undone.

Power Minister Adelabu's resignation before March 31 isn't just a political story. It's a measurement.

He inherited a sector with an installed capacity of 13,625 megawatts and actual generation averaging around 4,000. He announced a target of 6,000 megawatts. He leaves with the grid at 3,331. In his tenure, the grid has collapsed repeatedly. Gas supply has dropped to less than 43 per cent of the required volume. The debt to generation companies has grown from N4 trillion to nearly N7 trillion.

He didn't make it worse on his own. The structure was already broken before he arrived. But the promise was made, the target was set, and now the minister who set it is running for governor.

Whoever replaces him will inherit the N7 trillion bill, the 16 offline plants, the gas suppliers who want upfront payment, and a committee tasked with fixing transmission.

That's the job description. The advertisement closes March 31.
