THE LAST FAST

Tuesday, 17 March 2026

Ramadan ends tonight or tomorrow. Nigeria kept going.

Today is likely the final day of Ramadan. The crescent gets sighted tonight or tomorrow — the Sultan of Sokoto makes the call — and then it's Eid.

One hundred million Nigerians have been fasting through a month that included a war, petrol at N1,300 per litre, bombs going off, and a budget crisis. The mosques were still full. The final ten nights drew thousands for all-night Taraweeh prayers and Quran completion vigils. Community iftars were set up at crossroads by NGOs, state agencies, and private donors — volunteers serving jollof and zobo to anyone who queued.

In Enugu Ezike, the Ogrute Central Mosque was burnt down in September 2017 — who was responsible was never definitively established. It was rebuilt. This Ramadan, Jumaah prayers drew over 300 worshippers. The community kept praying.

The Eid clothes are sewn. The families are heading home. The federal government is expected to declare a public holidayfor Eid al-Fitr, likely Thursday or Friday.

Nigeria runs on a clock that predates every system that's breaking down. This is the evidence.
