YOUR VISA APPOINTMENT IS A HOSTAGE

Friday, 06 March 2026

The US Embassy closed over Iran. You paid for your slot. That's not their problem.

The US Embassy in Abuja cancelled all visa appointments for March 4 and 5. It stays closed until Monday, March 9.

The reason: potential protests in Abuja linked to the killing of Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in US-Israeli airstrikes.

Members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria staged protests in Yobe, Sokoto, Kaduna, and Lagos. Security agencies anticipated similar demonstrations in Abuja. The embassy shut down.

Hundreds of Nigerians had visa appointments those days. Many travelled from other states to make it. Some booked flights. Some took days off work. None of that matters to the embassy's security calculation.

This is what "global instability" feels like from Abuja. Not as a headline. As a cancelled slot, a wasted trip, and a rescheduled date that might shift again.

The connection worth naming: the same war pushing your petrol price toward N1,000 is also the reason you can't get your American visa interview this week. Iran is not your war. But you're paying for it at the pump and at the gate.
