Canada opened a side entrance for doctors this week. The main entrance is getting harder for everyone else.
Canada announced five new Express Entry draw categories this week targeting medical doctors, senior managers, researchers, and transport workers with prior Canadian work experience. If you’re a Nigerian doctor already working in Canada on a temporary permit, this is your clearest path to permanent residency yet.
If you’re in Nigeria planning to japa to Canada, the picture is different.
Overall work permit quotas are down. Study permit caps are still in place. Roughly 155,000 spots nationally in 2026, down sharply from recent years. Prime Minister Carney has framed the cuts as necessary to ease pressure on housing and public services. Quebec has its own separate caps on top of that.
The Canada being sold to you in 2026 isn’t the Canada of 2022. The door is still open. It has more locks. It rewards people already inside more than people trying to get in. That’s not a reason not to go. It’s a reason to plan with accurate information, not the version from three years ago.
